Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation
(TMS) Therapy
Each individual is unique, and sometimes conventional treatments such as medication and counselling may not be effective for everyone. This is where TMS therapy at East Side Recovery can help, providing the benefits and relief you need.
Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a painless and noninvasive therapy that utilises magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in the brain. It is an effective treatment option for individuals who have not seen improvement with other forms of depression treatment.
TMS treatment has been found to improve symptoms of depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and PTSD by changing the brain’s activity patterns. Often used as a last resort for those who have not had success with medication or therapy, TMS therapy offers a promising alternative for achieving mental wellness.

How does TMS Treatment work?
During a session of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), a small coil that emits electromagnetic waves is placed gently against the scalp near the forehead. The coil sends a painless magnetic pulse to stimulate nerve cells in the specific region of the brain that plays a crucial role in regulating mood and managing depression. The stimulation helps to increase the activity level of the nerve cells and improve the overall function of the brain.
Treatment sessions last about 30 minutes and a minimum of 20 sessions over consecutive weekdays is typically recommended for optimal therapeutic results. Some patients may choose to continue with maintenance treatment at less frequent intervals. During TMS treatment, patients receive ongoing monitoring to track progress and wellbeing, and to identify any potential side effects.
TMS Treatment doesn’t cause any side effects like seizures or memory loss. There is no use of anesthesia during treatment.
Why TMS?
Depression can be treated, but unfortunately some individuals may not respond to conventional treatments such as medication and talk therapy (psychotherapy). When such standard treatments prove to be ineffective, repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) is often used as an alternative therapy. This safe and non-invasive treatment provides an effective option for those who have not had success with traditional treatments.
Who is suitable for TMS treatment?
TMS treatment in Boronia, Melbourne can be a viable alternative for patients who have medication-resistant depression. However, certain factors may make a patient unsuitable for TMS treatment.
Individuals with a history of epilepsy or seizures, those who are pregnant, and those under 18 years of age are generally not eligible for TMS treatment. It’s important to discuss your medical history with your healthcare provider to determine if TMS is an appropriate treatment option for you.
